Terms of use
The terms on which Thelmoros publishes bridgettemorrissey.com: what you may do with our guides to Greek mythology, what we can and cannot promise about the site, and which law applies if something goes wrong. They are short, because a free reading site does not need long ones.
About these terms
Thelmoros is an independent publisher of free reading guides to Greek mythology, based at Level 2, 12 Kelburn Parade, Kelburn, Wellington 6012, New Zealand. This page sets out the terms on which we publish bridgettemorrissey.com and on which you may read, print and quote what is on it.
By using the site you accept these terms. If there is something here you are unwilling to accept, the remedy costs you nothing — stop using the site. Nothing here asks you for money, an account or an ongoing commitment.
We have written this in plain English rather than conventional drafting, because terms nobody reads protect nobody. It describes how we operate; it is not legal advice.
The short version
- Free to read, with no account and no payment.
- Read it, print it, teach from it, quote it with our name attached.
- Ask us before republishing a whole guide or reusing our plates on their own.
- Educational information, not advice about your assessment.
- New Zealand law applies, and your consumer rights are untouched.
Using the site
Every guide and reading note is free to read. There is no login, subscription, paywall or payment facility, and you never have to identify yourself to read anything.
Use the site for personal reading, study, teaching and research. In return we ask that you do not:
- interfere with the site or the server it runs on, or try to reach any part of it that has not been published;
- copy the site wholesale, or run automated collection that degrades access for other readers;
- present our writing as your own work, or as somebody else's;
- alter a guide and republish it under our name;
- use the site unlawfully, or in a way that would expose us to a claim.
There is nowhere here to upload a file, post a comment or publish anything, so we hold no reader-submitted content. The only thing you can send us is a message through the contact form or an ordinary email, and our privacy notice says what happens to it.
What the guides are, and are not
Our guides are general educational information about Greek mythology and the ancient texts that record it, pitched at roughly senior secondary and first-year tertiary level in New Zealand.
They are not academic advice, and not a substitute for your set texts, the translation your course prescribes, or your teacher's instructions. If you are being assessed, your school, kura or institution decides which sources are acceptable and how they must be cited, so check there before you rely on us.
We take accuracy seriously and correct our mistakes in public. Even so, translations differ and specialists disagree about dating, authorship and meaning, so a guide is a considered reading rather than the last word. If you think we have something wrong, write to hello@bridgettemorrissey.com and name the guide and the passage.
Intellectual property
The text of the guides and reading notes, the page designs, the illustrated plates and the name Thelmoros are ours, protected by the Copyright Act 1994.
The ancient works we discuss belong to nobody. Homer, Hesiod, the Homeric Hymns, Pindar, the Athenian tragedians, Apollodorus and Ovid are long out of copyright, and the translations we quote are public domain too. Quote them as freely as we do.
Without asking us first, you may:
- read, print and save pages for your own study;
- print or project copies for a class or library session, with our name left on them;
- quote a short passage with attribution to Thelmoros and, where the format allows, a link.
Please write to us before you:
- republish a whole guide, or a substantial part of one;
- use our illustrations separately from the text they were drawn for;
- include our material in something you sell or distribute commercially.
We answer those requests, usually within two working days, and for classroom and library use the answer is nearly always yes. We do not license our name or our plates as anybody else's branding.
Links to other websites
The guides link only to other pages on this site. Where a page does point outward — our privacy notice names the Office of the Privacy Commissioner, and every page loads its two typefaces from the font host fonts.bunny.net — those services are not ours to control. A link is not an endorsement, and once you arrive their terms and privacy notices apply rather than ours. Tell us if a link here is broken or leads somewhere unexpected.
Availability of the site
This is a small set of static pages maintained by a small team, hosted on a server in the United States. We would like it to be available whenever you want it, and we cannot promise that: hosting fails, networks drop, certificates expire at inconvenient hours, and maintenance sometimes happens during the day. We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free access, and we offer no service level.
We also change the site. Guides are rewritten when we find a better reading, pages are merged, and occasionally something is withdrawn. We keep addresses stable where we reasonably can, but we do not undertake to keep any page online forever. If you need a guide to stay fixed for a course, print or save a copy.
Liability
Everything here is published free and in good faith. To the extent the law allows, Thelmoros is not liable for loss or damage arising from your use of the site or your reliance on it, including indirect and consequential loss, loss of data, and the outcome of any assessment that drew on our material.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by our negligence.
Your rights under New Zealand consumer law
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 where those Acts apply to what we do. If anything on this page conflicts with them, they prevail.
In practice the material here is supplied free of charge, and parts of that legislation are written around supplies made in trade for a price, so not every guarantee will be engaged by a free web page. Where we do supply something on a quoted basis — a printed classroom set, or a reading session for a school or library — that is a supply in trade, and the consumer guarantees apply in the ordinary way. We also try not to claim anything about this site that we cannot support, and if you think we have, we would rather hear from you first.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms when the law changes or when a clause turns out to be unclear. The version on this page is always the current one, and the date beneath the heading is when it took effect. We do not run a mailing list, so that dated line is the only notice. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms.
Governing law and how to reach us
These terms, and any dispute arising from them or from your use of the site, are governed by the law of New Zealand, and the courts of New Zealand have jurisdiction.
